Govt to provide students study material for national exams

Expressing concern over the performance of students from J&K to crack all-India services examinations, banking and other national-level competitive examinations in the absence of textbooks and other study material, the government is likely to provide the same in the district libraries and counseling centres in J&K, soon.

Sources said a sum of Rs 3.50 crore in 2019-2020 at Rs 50 lakh each for the purpose would be provided either in the district libraries and the counselling centres operated by the Employment Department to get the required books and study material, which help the students to clear competitive examinations.

Sources further said it was observed by the government that students from J&K in adequate numbers did not qualify for the all-India service examinations as compared to other states and union territories where ample number of books and study material was available in all libraries and counseling centresl

In the first phase, Pulwama, Baramulla, Kupwara, Kathua, Poonch, Doda and Leh districts will be taken up, wherein, the books and study material will be provided.

“A proposal has been put up to invite reputed career counsellors to visit higher secondary schools and college to make the students aware of the opportunities available to them across various fields. A sum of Rs 2 crore is also being provided for this purpose”, an official informed.

In December 2018, the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) Chairperson, Prof Veena Pandita, during an interview had stressed on the importance of restructuring of academic courses, modernisation of technology for the overall personality development of students. She also admitted that the students from J&K got poor percentage while qualifying the competitive examination at the national level.

Prof Pandita said the school education board was making efforts to frame a curriculum in a synchronised manner so that the basics were clear to the students.
