A senior police official said the militants lobbed a grenade at a police party deployed near a bank in the main chowk at Sopore town around 4:10 pm. “Four personnel were injured in the explosion,” the official said.

The injured policemen were immediately shifted to hospitals, where they were treated for wounds and are reported to be in a stable condition.

In a separate incident, unidentified burglars late Tuesday night dug out an ATM machine and fled with it from the Achabal Adda area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The machine contained nearly Rs 21 lakh. The looted ATM belonged to the State Bank of India (SBI).

The police have registered a case under Section 458 of the RPC, and an investigation has been initiated. “It will be early to point fingers. Let us initiate the investigation, only then we will be able to say who has done this,” said a senior police officer. This is third such burglary involving ATMs in Anantnag district this year apart from several bank robberies across the south Kashmir region carried out by unidentified gunmen.
