The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu, is set to start its new session on the Nagrota campus that is expected to be partially completed by mid-July.
IIT-Jammu was inaugurated on August 6, 2016, by Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar in a rented building at Paloura in Jammu. On the same day, the work was started to construct the full-fledged campus at Jagti-Nagrota on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Though the building will take some more time to complete, the management has speed up the work for the basic infrastructure required to start the next batch on the new campus.
Total 90 students were enrolled at the IIT-Jammu last year, who were accommodated at the transit campus at Paloura, which had the maximum capacity of 90 students only. The administration had to complete the new building by July this year, as the new batch has to be accommodated in August.
“The work is being going on in full swing and all the basic requirements for the fresh batch will be provided on the new campus by mid-July,” said DK Pandya, director in charge, IIT-Jammu.
“Only the fresh batch will be accommodated on the Nagrota campus, the previous batch will continue their next semesters on the Paloura campus only,” he added.
Pandya informed The Tribune all the basic facilities would be provided to the students on the new campus, including hostel, laboratories and classrooms.
The new campus will be established on 25 acres of land with a total capacity of 400 students, including hostel and classrooms. At present, the IIT-Jammu has only three streams — computer science, mechanical and electrical engineering. Meanwhile, civil engineering is also expected to be started from the next session.
