The incident took place around 50 km from the district headquarters. This is the second leopard to have died in the district in a year. A three-year-old male leopard was found dead earlier this year in the Dudwar-Changa area under Bhaderwah forest division in Gandho tehsil.

“Immediately after we got a call from a senior official about the mysterious death of a leopard in Phalshod village of Gundana, we rushed to the spot and shifted the body to the district headquarters,” said one of the two members of a team of officials.

“We are not in a position to ascertain the cause of the death as the post-mortem of the leopard is yet to be completed,” he added.

Leopards are found in abundance in the forest area of Chenab region, where incidents of man-animal conflict are frequent but the Wildlife Department is yet to reach any conclusion whether the leopard got killed by hunters or died a natural death.
