Srinagar, November 26
To save the Dal Lake from encroachments, the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority has proposed a new Western Foreshore Road along the western peripheries of the lake.
The proposed road project, which is subject to approval by the J&K High Court, is tipped to be around 2.5 km in length, starting from Mamta Crossing near Dalgate up to the Saida Kadal locality.
“The proposed road project will delineate the western boundary of the lake and will also help in decongestion of the traffic on the Boulevard road and the old city,” Abdul Hafiz Shah, vice-chairman of the lake authority, said.
The proposed road project with an estimated cost of Rs 36 crore, if approved, will pass through localities such as Khanyar, Mamta Crossing and Saida Kadal in old Srinagar, the areas along the western peripheries of the lake. Sources said the proposed road project, which would also help in checking the encroachments on the lake along its much-prone western banks, also involves least number of structures that need to be acquired for paving way for the Western Foreshore Road.
Pertinently, the Northern Foreshore Road, towards the northern peripheries of the lake, serves as an important link road connecting Hazratbal locality, an important tourist attraction in the city, with Nishat Bagh, one of the magnificent Mughal Gardens and a major tourist attraction of Srinagar.
