Jammu, July 11
The north tube of the Jawahar Tunnel, linking the Valley with the rest of the country, was thrown open to traffic after repair work was carried out by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) with the help of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The tube was thrown open to traffic around 2 pm after safety checks.
“The repair work was carried out by the BRO and NHAI. The work started on Tuesday and it was completed on Wednesday. The NHAI provided the help by engaging engineers of Navyug Private Ltd, which is constructing a new road tunnel between Banihal and Qazigund,” said an official of the district administration. “Though the traffic has been restored in the north tube, a strict vigil is being maintained inside the tunnel around the unlined area,” the official added.
It was around 6.30 am on Tuesday that rocks had fallen inside the north tube after which vehicles were diverted through the south tube.
A BRO official said the tunnel was safe for movement as it had been repaired and safety checks had done. —TNS
