While banks are trying to outdo each other by installing more ATMs (automated teller machines) in Jammu, most of them either remain out of service or are without cash, causing agony to customers.
Customers have to go from one ATM to other to withdraw cash.
“The government policy of charging the user for swiping his card in the ATM of the other bank after a particular usage is unfair. When we are not able to withdraw cash from our ATM, we use other bank’s ATM often and after a particular number of swipes, a sum is deducted from our account,” said Akshay Gupta, a SBI customer.
While the government is promoting cashless transactions policy, customers face hardships when the ATMs are out of order.
“Everybody is not comfortable with digital or net banking. It gets difficult for elderly persons to go from one ATM to other to withdraw cash,” said Brij Mohan Sharma, a retired government employee.
A senior bank manager said: “ATMs are filled to capacity every day, but the public transactions are more than an ATM can provide.”
