Srinagar, July 13
Renowned gynaecologist Dr Girija Dhar passed away on Friday morning at her Boulevard residence in Srinagar. She was 85.
According to family sources, she complained of chest pain and collapsed at 10.30 am. The family members tried to resuscitate her but she died within a few minutes after heart attack. “Don’t disturb me. Let me go”, were her last words, said her student and well-known gynaecologist Dr Bilquees.
“She had a fall a few weeks back and suffered a fracture in the neck and femur. After that, she was doing well but unfortunately, she had a cardiac arrest today and couldn’t survive,” said Dr Bilquees.
She will be cremated on Saturday in the Karan Nagar locality of Srinagar.
Dhar graduated from King George Medical College, Lucknow, and had several fellowships from the United Kingdom. She later joined Government Medical College and became the head of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology. She established Lal Ded Hospital in Srinagar and was instrumental in shaping the maternity services in Kashmir.
