Jammu, April 4
While the government is investing crores of rupees to fight drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir, a sand artist is using his skill to fight a lonely battle to save youth from falling into the trap of drug mafia.
Suresh Kumar uses the most commonly available material — sand — as his canvas to spread awareness about the deadly effects of smoking and psychotropic drugs.
Inspired by renowned sand sculptor Sudarsan Pattnaik of Odisha, Suresh a graduate in fine arts from University of Jammu, has taken part in several art exhibitions. He has been involved in the anti-drug campaign for the past over a decade.
People do not know much about this art but slowly they are appreciating his efforts. “I feel happy because my aim is to create awareness about the ill-effects of drugs and smoking. This medium is a new way to express my opinion,” said Suresh.
He said while the sand art was mainly considered domain of people living along the oceans, but in Jammu the Tawi bank was the best place to showcase the art and accompanying message.
“I think the Tawi is not only revered by people but is part of identity of the Dogras whose generations have lived in the city. I also want to send the message of saving water bodies from pollution,” he added.
His only regret is the government does not recognise his efforts. “I don’t seek any favour from the government but at least the administration can help me reach out to the people. Whatever I am doing, it’s from my own limited resources,” said Suresh.
