Jammu, November 10

Ace sport climber of J&K Shivani Charak has brought laurels to the state by securing 9th position in the bouldering competition in the Asian Youth Championship held at Chongquing in China from November 1 to 4, 2018.

During the event, Shivani faced a stiff competition from 21 seasoned climbers from prominent Asian countries.

She performed creditably to secure the 9th place in the ‘Youth A girls’ group but narrowly missed entering the final round wherein only six best climbers qualified. Considering the fact that there is no climbing infrastructure in the state, the climber had to continuously shuttle between Jammu and Delhi for practising on standard walls.

Earlier, in the lead climbing competition, Shivani could not do much against a tough competition from the top climbers of the world due to inexperience and lack of exposure to big events. She secured 13th rank.

“My main problem was that I had no experience of climbing in cold conditions and that too on very small holds,” Shivani said. “By working harder on chips (small holds) during coming winters, I will definitely improve my game and perform better in future international competitions,” she said.

Pertinently, Shivani was among the 11 climbers of the country, including six girls, selected by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, for the prestigious international event.
