Three students in the Valley tried to end their life after failing in the Class XII board exams, one of whom died on reaching the hospital on Wednesday, officials said.
The Class XII results were declared by the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) on Monday. This year, 52 per cent students qualified the exams, witnessing a dip of 9 per cent from the last academic session.
On Wednesday, a girl student committed suicide in Chewdara village of Beerwah in central Kashmir’s Budgam district after she failed to qualify the Class XII exams.
According to police, the 18-year old girl (name withheld) consumed poison at her home.
“She was immediately rushed to the Sub-District Hospital, Beerwah, from where she was shifted to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Bemina, for advanced treatment. However, she succumbed on reaching the hospital,” an official said.
A day ago, two other girls who failed to qualify the exams tried to commit suicide in the Bandipora and Sopore areas of north Kashmir.
A police officer said a girl (name withheld) tried to commit suicide in Qazipora village of Bandipora by consuming some poisonous substance at her home. Another girl jumped into the Jhelum near the Batpora area of Sopore. She was rescued by some locals and shifted to the Sub-District Hospital, Sopore, for treatment. Both the girls, officials said, were undergoing treatment.
Terming the suicide attempts as unfortunate, a senior official in the education department said the students who have either failed to qualify or performed poorly in the exams would be counselled.
