In the modern capitalistic economy, competition compels a number of us to pursue target-oriented goals frequently to no worthwhile end. The Mosaic Principle: The Six Dimensions of  Successful Life and Career by Nick Lovegrove examines how to find not only material success but also fulfillment in life’s work. According to him the first step in doing so is developing a moral compass of guiding principles which will make even the most mundane work feel meaningful. Secondly, he suggests that studying two or more of one’s areas of interest can make you more desirable in the job market, adaptable, and capable of making big picture connections.

He highlights the importance of having a moral compass to move ahead in career as well as in life. This compass should guide day-to-day choices, decisions and sacrifices needed to achieve goals.

Lovegrove also discusses the importance of breadth in addition to specialisation in one’s career. To illustrate this, he cites “A 2016 study of recently graduated MBA students [which] showed that generalists get better offers than specialists” because they “had a diverse range of skills”. Generalists make good leaders and leaders, advocate for “change and experimentation” which is more meaningful than “seeking to preserve the status quo”. Therefore, studying more than one subject area can improve one’s ability to think out-of-the-box and thus expand your opportunities within your life and career.
