Chandigarh: The Department of Music, PU, organised a lecture on 100 years of Jallianwala Bagh by Prof Sukhmani Bal Riar, Department of History, PU, on Monday. Prof Riar spoke about the importance of the day. She explained how Gen Dyer marched to Jallianwala Bagh and opened fire killing more than 1,000 persons. Students and faculty paid homage to the martyr by observing a two-minute silence. TNS

Gender-based violence discussed

Chandigarh: The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, PU, organised a special lecture by Sanam Suthirath Wazir, senior campaigner, Amnesty International India, here on Monday. Wazir said it had now become tough to talk about social taboos, especially related to gender equality, at public places. He talked about gender-based violence that created both physiological and psychological pressure on women. He threw light on the rising number of cases of quick character assassination and ignorance towards post-traumatic stress disorder in women. TNS

6th convocation of USOL

Chandigarh: The University School of Open Learning, PU, organised its sixth convocation and 46th annual prize distribution function on Monday. The function was presided over by DUI Prof Shankarji Jha and KP Singh, DGP Vigilance (Haryana). KP Singh congratulated the students on receiving degrees and said one should practice what one learned. He said one should focus on preservation of human values which had perennial significance. Chairperson, Prof Yojna Rawat highlighted the events and activities carried out throughout the year.

Conference on biodiversity, health

Chandigarh: The Department of Zoology, Centre for Advance studies, PU, will hold a two-day national conference, Zoocon-2019, on Wednesday and Thursday. The conference will include five technical sessions, preceded by an inaugural session, with main focus on finding real world solutions for linking biodiversity with human health and well-being. The multidimensional event will incorporate technical presentations and talks by renowned speakers and researchers from academia and industry. TNS

Blood donation camp 

Chandigarh: The Department of Laws, PU, in collaboration with PGIMER, organised a blood donation camp. Over 50 students and faculty donated blood. A total of 56 units of blood were collected. DSW (Men) Emanuel Nahar and DSW (Women), Dr Neena Caplash were also present. TNS
