Forced by TRP ratings, TV news channels are really scare mongers and make a mountain out of a molehill (Kaffeeklatsch). These channels appear to forget that exaggeration can put the image of a person/political party/organization at stake. The problem caused by dengue and chikungunya is not confined to Delhi alone. Other cities, too, have reported these cases in this fever season, which is an annual feature. No doubt the authorities must step up efforts and prevent the spread of these diseases.

Western Command

The President is the Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces. The Defence Minister is a de facto C-in-C, a powerful post. Sometimes defence ministers, like Krishna Menon, misused their powers to browbeat an armed forces’ chief (the case of Gen VK Singh was unique). Our present Raksha Mantri, Manohar Parrikar, has realized that there should not be any delay in the appointment of heads of crucial posts like the Western Command chief, particularly when Pakistan is itching for confrontation.

Haryana women

Hats off to Haryana women who overcame deep-rooted gender biases to emerge winners in their life (‘Tough women...’). Olympic Bronze medalist Sakshi Malik, HCS selectees Sweta Suhag and Shashi Vasundhra have proved that girls can excel in all fields. The story of Shashi Vasundhra was particularly inspiring.

Women must be bold

If men are aggressive and hostile to women, in many cases it is often due to women’s meekness. So, all-women police stations may boost the morale of women, but much depends upon a woman’s courage to report a crime. These stations should not only act as deterrent, but should focus on strengthening the mental makeup of women. Education can play a big role in this.

Online piracy

If one can access/download movies, he should not be penalized. The technique should be such that no viewer can download a movie free of cost (‘Viewer discretion required’). Once the sites for free downloads is blocked, there should be no way to access it. The government has already blocked free magazines downloading from ‘Nova file.’ The same way online piracy can be tackled.

Stone-pelting

Normalcy must be restored in Kashmir. It is the responsibility of the Centre and the state government to take measures – even harsh if required -- to maintain peace in the border state. (‘Cast in iron…’). Local people are suffering unnecessarily; they must be taken into confidence. Also, there is no point initiating dialogue with Pakistan. Instead, it is time to pay them back in the same coin.

Farm multiplier

Drone technology can be of use over large farmland in increasing productivity by forewarning. The agricultural crisis in India demands utmost attention and commitment. Since most landholdings are small and marginal, the use of high technology has its own limitations. Yet technology can always be improved. Agriculture extension services need to rise to the occasion by rendering effective tips to the needy farmers.
