A 20-member band The Phoenix recently had its official launch at Chandigarh Press Club.

We talk to the lead singer, Karen, of Awaaz Punjab Di fame and music director Jaison Thind, who has composed music for movies like Manje Bistre, to know about the band and its music

What is the concept of your band?

Our concept is quite simple—adaptability and versatility. We don’t want to fix ourselves to one type of singing. We have added flavours like Sufi, Bollywood and folk music to the band. We are planning to sing according to the tastes of the audiences. We have tried to add many new elements, including magic tricks. We have also introduced a desi twist to Micheal Jackson’s music.

How did the both of you team up?

Jaison: Karen is a melodious singer. We worked together while recording a song earlier this year, and that is when we thought we should team up to do something new. After many long meetings, we came up with the idea of this band.

Karen: While working together, we thought we must go compose music together because we were compatible as a team. We have worked extremely hard for the past couple of months for and conceptualizing and preparing for our launch.

What is your vision for the band?

We want to make our audience happy through our music. We want to cater to music lovers around the world. Starting from Chandigarh, we’re first planning to reach out to the people of North India, and slowly across the nation. We are just hoping that people like our music. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

Why the name The Phoenix?

While brainstorming for the name, a friend of mine suddenly talked about flying, and we later came up with the idea of a Phoenix’s flight. Just like the bird, we also wish to take a flight towards better music.

What is one message you’d like to give to your fellow listeners?

All we would wish to say is that we as singers are honest with our work, and we wish that our listeners identify that honesty in our music. We wish to entertain them through good music.
