Happy in his space
Actor Gulshan Nain gets candid about his journey in showbiz, how his web series All About Section 377 and its sequel Still about section 377 mean a lot to him. Read on...
You debuted with Friends Condition Apply. How was your experience?
I was very lucky to have bagged a show in just three months after I came to Mumbai. I was totally raw, without any experience at all. The show was a great learning experience for me and I enjoyed a lot as the 1st schedule was shot in Manali. We had a lot of fun there.
We hear there is a story behind your name. Please share.
Gulshan means flower garden and the story behind it is a funny one. Actually, my name was Gaurav till I was 1-year-old but my grandfather was such a huge fan of Gulshan Kumar that he named me after him.
What kind of TV shows do you want to do?
There are no specifications for that. In any creative field, all a person wants is creative satisfaction. So, I just want to act.
Please share about your role in web series All About Section 377.
My character Suresh Chaudhary is a homophobic guy who comes to Mumbai to become an actor and finds out that the cousin who he is supposed to stay with is gay. So, this is a story about how a perception of a homophobic guy changes when he sees their struggles in personal and professional lives.
Season 2 of the same series is coming with the title Still about section 377. Tell us about it.
As this is the continuation of the first series, Suresh Chaudhary has matured now and is in support of the LGBT community. When he visits the village to help his brother in getting his boyfriend back, he also meets a transgender, who is a talented writer. So, it’s their track where he becomes friends with him and tries to help him.
What is the reaction you are getting from Season 2 promo?
People have been waiting since a long time for it after watching the first season. We all have been getting messages regarding the release of the second season. We have released the trailer and the reactions are amazing.
Are you not scared of being typecast for doing such series?
No, not at all. I am glad I am part of such a unique and amazingly written series, which shows the important concerns related to the LGBT community and helps creating awareness in a light-hearted manner.
We hear this time it’s going to be a rural setup.
Yes, we shot in my village called Jatkhor. It’s near the Delhi-Haryana border.
What’s your viewpoint on LGBT community?
During the shoot, I got to know a lot about them. And now, thanks to the historical decision of our Supreme Court, they are free to choose their partners. It’s their life and they have complete freedom. This was the very basic right which was taken away from them earlier.
