The ever-so-charming Shashi Kapoor is finally receiving his due in the form of a Dadasaheb Phalke Award by the Indian government, as it was announced on Monday. The more-than-100-films, 77-year-old actor gave a free rein to his acting talent around the age of four, by acting in plays directed by his father, Prithviraj Kapoor.
Shashi Kapoor then went on to take Bollywood by storm in the 1940s with films like Aag (1948) and Aawara (1951), where he played the younger version of a character played by his elder brother, Raj Kapoor.
As the news of him being awarded on Monday broke, nephew Rishi Kapoor took to Twitter: “Yessssssss! Shashi Kapoor to get the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award for contribution to Indian Cinema. Well deserved uncle. God Bless!”
Rishi followed it up with: “Third Padma Bhushan and third Phalke award in the family. Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor being the other recipients”
Shashi Kapoor becomes the 46th winner of the honour so far. Back in the day, Shashi Kapoor was one of the first mainstream actors to be a part of international cinema, with movies like The Householder (1963), Shakespeare Wallah (1965), Bombay Talkie (1970) and Heat and Dust (1972).
