Punjabi film Carry On Jatta 2 has recorded the highest opening weekend box-office collections at Rs 13.15-crore and the film has already made Rs 20.71-crore within three days of its release! Notably, the prequel, Carry On Jatta, did a business of Rs 24-crore worldwide.
Out of the 14-15 films released till June 2018, most have done average business at the Punjabi box-office. Films like Sajjan Singh Rangroot, Laung Laachi and Harjeeta were average performers. Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Sajjan Singh Rangroot, however, managed to make net business of Rs 11 crore worldwide.
Comic line
Shares Gunbir Sidhu, one of the producers of Carry On Jatta 2, “We were expecting a huge response to the film. It has the best actor-comedians you could ask for — Gurpreet Ghuggi, Karamjit Anmol, Binnu Dhillon, Gippy Grewal, BN Sharma; it already had all the elements of a great comedy film.” The producers of the film are expecting a business of Rs 20-crore more. Carry On Jatta 2 opened at 61 screens in Pakistan, and as many as 80 in Canada and America.
Comedy films have indeed done well this year. Roshan Prince, Karamjit Anmol, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Harby Sangha-starrer Laavan Phere did a worldwide net business of Rs 6 crore, while yet another comedy film, Golak Bugni Bank Tey Batua did a net business of Rs 6-6.5 crore. Says actor-comedian Binnu Dhillon, “Comedy is a difficult, yet a safe genre. We are living in stressful time, so nobody minds a bit of comedy. Carry On Jatta 2 is an easy-breezy film and thus scores well.”
