Shilpa Shetty: 'Yoga has changed my life'
What is yoga for you?
Yog is a timeless science, which is extremely beneficial. I really feel that everyone should benefit from it. We should not talk about it only on International Yoga Day, in fact, it should be a part of our day-to-day life.
What’s the significance of yoga in your life?
Eighteen years ago, I was suffering from severe cervical problems. It was then that I started doing yoga and there has been no looking back. I can only say that yoga has been my biggest stress-buster, confidence-giver and age-reverser! Yoga has changed my life, my body and my mind. It changes the way you perceive things and makes you much calmer.
What type of asanas do you prefer the most?
I prefer Ashtanga yoga.
How are you celebrating International Day of Yoga this year?
Well, I have launched my fitness app. The app has a section for dietary counselling as well because just working-out or practicing yoga is not enough.
Do you think mental health is also an issue that needs to be addressed?
Yes, I feel mental illness is a big issue and should be addressed broadly. I still feel there is a stigma attached to mental health in terms of not being able to speak about it. People still do not want to address the issue publicly. In my opinion, I feel people should focus more on mental health than on the body.
Besides yoga, what do you suggest is the best way to stay fit?
Dancing is one way to stay fit. I don’t get the time to dance as I’m occupied with work. But thanks to the reality show that I am doing, I see the opportunity of reliving my dancing moments. I dance my heart out when I’m at a wedding or with my friends or get any opportunity to let my hair down on the dance floor. It is one way of de-stressing and losing calories.
