Shabana Azmi’s upcoming film The Black Prince brings to the silver screen one of the important chapters in the colonial history that has remained untouched and unknown by many Indians.

It is a biopic on the last King of Punjab, Maharajah Duleep Singh, his relationship with Queen Victoria and his struggle to reclaim his throne during Britain’s occupation of India.

The veteran actress, who plays the mother to the lead character, played by Sufi singer, composer and song-writer, Satinder Sartaaj, revealed what made her say ‘yes’ to the film.

“When I was offered this role, I wasn’t too aware of this chapter from history. But I was really fascinated when I read the script. I realized that for the people associated with the film; be it the producer, director or Satinder himself, this was more of a tribute.

Portions of film have also been shot in England. Talking about the shooting experience, the 66-year-old said, “A lot of hard work was involved to portray the times in which the film is set. A lot of money has been spent as well. We have actually shot in many real palaces, including Princess Diana’s.” The movie, in English, Hindi and Punjabi, will hit the theaters on July 21. —ANI
