Trend-o-meter 2018
Manpriya Singh
Cold shoulder didn’t make sense to a lot of people, but, nevertheless, when a trend is here what do you do? Ape it. Amend it. Or ignore it; which was a little hard to it, considering the cold shoulder had a lot of offshoots; deconstructed sleeves, off the shoulder tops and one-shoulder silhouettes. There are trends that we wish to say goodbye to; some we hope to continue with and the rest, we predict would be back in the coming year. Some fashionably forward thinking for the year 2018.
Tulle pieces
Transparency was one big takeaway trend by the end of September (New York Fashion Week) this year. From Victoria Beckham to Emporio Armani to Burbbery everybody had their interpretation of sheer. Closer home, the sheer fabrics—organza and tulle were seen predominantly in Sahil Kochhar’s collection for spring summer 2018. The trend looks tailor-made for spring season, all the more when layered with crop tops, strap tops or slip dresses. Endorsed by the ‘unignorable’ fast fashion retailer Zara, the tulle pieces will be here and how.
Ruched silhouettes
The bows, the ruffles and the knots, have been here and seen everywhere, ruched up garments, however, might make a grand entry for the coming spring. “They work just as well as bandage dresses in complementing the figure, but are slightly more feminine and more spring,” opines Manvita Arora, a fashion design pass-out from INIFD currently working with an export house.
Jumpsuits
Only recently the entire nation saw Anushka Sharma shuttle flights and check into a hotel with a utility jumpsuit in denim. Rather than the glammed-up version, utilitarian practical form of jumpsuits will pop up. The trend was predominantly sported at ramp shows of Gucci and Tod’s.
Denim-on-denim
Can denim be really in? Since it can never be really out! Let’s just say it will be more in than ever before. Opines Sakshi, “Denim-on-denim is one of the most sustainable, affordable and restylable fashion trend. I have all reasons to believe that it will be big in 2018.” The big ticket names who endorsed the denim-on-denim trend for the coming spring range from Tom Ford to Nina Ricci to Versus. Period!

Bye, bye 2017
Those from the industry wish rather than predict that’s a farewell to black choker necklaces, mismatched earrings, crop tops, and blue and white stripes. Let’s hear it from them.
Under the radar
“Rugged look in several garments should be out. Rugged denims is fine, but rugged skirts and trousers and several other lowers don’t make sense to me. Also cold shoulders, unless they are reinterpreted and stylized properly, should be out. Instead of cold shoulders we can have collars and interesting necklines next year,” says Sakshi Bhalla, city girl who held a show, as a part of India Day, during the London Fashion Week in 2017.
