Rushad Rana, who is known for his role in popular shows such as Hip Hip Hurray, India Calling, Bhabhi, Mansha, Kumkum, CID, Crime Patrol and many more, has done several movies too. He was a part of movies like Mohabbatein, Veer-Zara, Dor and Madhur Bhandarkar’s Calendar Girls, to name a few. We caught up with Rushad for a candid chat. Here’s what all he said:
What does your name Rushad mean?
It’s a Persian name that means a happy soul. The one who keeps everyone happy.
How did you start off with your acting career?
I had made my portfolio right after junior college. I was hoping to get into modelling but I was a fat kid in school. Then Mona Irani offered me Hip-Hip Hurray and my career, as an actor, took off.
TV or films, which medium do you enjoy more and why?
Both the mediums have their plus and minus points. TV definitely has a wider reach. It gives you instant popularity, whereas in films, you will have to wait for the release. Also, even if you do a fabulous job in films, there is no reassurance that your scenes will be kept at the editor’s desk.
What kind of roles would you like to play now?
I want to do meaningful work. I am also interested in anchoring or being part of a comedy show.
Who is your favourite director and why?
My favourite director is Nagesh Kukunoor. Not only is he extremely talented and focused but he is also a great human being.
What are the qualities an actor must possess?
An actor’s personality, not looks, makes all the difference. His charisma sets him apart when facing the camera. Acting skills are of course the most important trait. Besides that, one should be sharp. An actor who can adapt and improvise easily gets an edge because a lot of changes happen on set.
Any particular character from books or films that you would like to play?
I would like to play Al Pacino’s character in Scent of a Woman. It’s a brilliant film and awesomely written and performed role.
What are your hobbies other than acting?
Photography and travelling.
