Wheels of fortune

Aryan Ghuman, a plus two student at Bhawan Vidyalaya, Sector-15, a five-time skating championship owes a lot to his mother Birinder Kaur. “Had it not been for her, I wouldn’t be able to get up in the morning and go for practice and study well,” beams this young skater who loves to play all kinds of sports. “But my heart lies in skating,” he answers with a broad smile.

The discovery

I started to skate when I was four-years-old. I have been skating for 11 years now, what started as fun game has grown into a passion, something that I want to achieve my best in.

The medal goes to

I have won nearly 23 medals in local, district and national level competitions. And I am the national champion in skating for the last five years. I won the President’s award in 2015. Not that I keep looking at the medals all the time, but they work as a source of motivation for me. I look at them and tell myself, I have a long way to skate still!

Striking the balance

It is not very difficult to manage my passion and my studies. I skate at odd hours like 4 am in the morning and evening around 7-8 after my tuitions. Neither studies nor skating is compromised.

My mother the strongest

For me to get up at 4, my mother has to get up at 3.30 in the morning. And then I owe a lot to my skating coach as well.  He keeps me motivated. In fact, I had dropped out of skating for two years, but he convinced me to get back to it, and now this is the sport that is taking me everywhere.

Sport, what is yours

Sports has made me disciplined and passionate. This has had a positive effect on my studies as well. As for me, I owe my admission to sports.

Up next

I want to be skating for International competitions and I am practising hard for it.

Cheat day

Never, no cheat day in skating, In fact, the day I don’t skate, I feel something is missing. I want the wheels under my feet.
