Chief Minister Harish Rawat honoured Lt Priya Semwal with the Tilu Rauteli Award and Kavita Bisht with the Mahila Samman here today.
These women had shown exceptional ability to overcome all odds and make a name for themselves. They were selected for the awards by the Department of Women and Child Development.
While Lt Priya Semwal decided to don the uniform after the death of her husband, an Army man, Kavita Bisht battled an acid attack to come up trumps.
Rawat said the goal of empowering women could be achieved by providing jobs and livelihood opportunities to them. “Education for girls is a small step. We will be failing ourselves if we do not provide job opportunities to women in the state,” he said.
He directed Chief Secretary N Ravishankar to start the midwife training course for women. He announced a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh for Kavita Bisht.
