4 held for blackmail, extortion

The Jagraon police have arrested four persons for alleged extortion. The accused have been identified as Lakhwinder Singh, alias Lakha, of Leelan Megh Singh village; Kamaljit Kaur, alias Jeoty, of Ramgarh Bhuller village; Karamjit Kaur of Chowkiman village and Jaswinder Kaur, alias Pooja, of Mullanpur Dakha.
Giving details, the Jagraon SSP, Surjeet Singh, said women members of the gang used to lure innocent people by contacting them on their mobile phones.
After identifying their target women members of the gang would establish contact with them. They would then click pictures of victims in objectionable state and start blackmailing them by threatening to upload these on the internet, the SSP said.
The gang extorted huge sum from Harjeet Singh of Tugalwala village; Gurjeet Singh of Ramgarh Bhullar village; Shaminder Singh of Zira and some others, said the police. During preliminary questioning, the accused confessed to their crime and revealed that they had cheated many people in the same manner, said investigating officer, ASI Surjit Singh. The police registered a case against the accused at Mullanpur Dakha police station and further investigation was on. The police also recovered Rs16,000 and a motorcycle (Bajaj Platina-PB10CD 5697) from the accused.
“Initially, victims were reluctant to report the matter as their prestige was at stake. But, when the accused continued to blackmail them, they complained to the police and the gang was busted,” the ASI said.
