The police today claimed to have busted a gang of auto-rickshaw operators with the arrest six of its members. They robbed their passengers of valuables and cash. They have been identified as Pardeep Singh of Tajpur road; Shiva, a resident of Iqbal Nagar; Love Sahota of Partap Nagar; Amit of Fish Market; Sunny of Guru Gobind Singh Nagar and Nand Kishore of Puneet Nagar.
Two members of the gang, Sonu, a resident of LIG flats, Samrala Chowk; and Kaka, a resident of Guru Arjan Dev Nagar, escaped. The police have recovered two motorcycles, one auto-rickshaw, one gold chain, 30 mobile phones and sharp weapons from them.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Surendra Lamba said these auto-rickshaw operators had formed a gang to loot passengers. They picked up passengers from bus stand and railway station and robbed them at knife point on the way. After robbing the passengers of valuables, they dumped them on the road, the ADCP added.
Lamba said Pardeep, Shiv and Love had been facing criminal cases registered against them at police stations here.
The police said all arrested persons would be produced before the court for their police remand. The police would question them to know about their remaining gang members and to recover the stolen valuables.
Recently, a Chandigarh-based medical representative was robbed near the Tajpur road. The robbers sprayed some chemical on his face, following which he fell unconscious.
They took away his cash and gold ornaments and dumped him on the Jagraon bridge. It is likely that the same gang is behind the robbery.
