In order to improve vocabulary of students, the State Education Department has started a new exercise under which one word is sent to schools every day, which is discussed in the morning assembly and explained in detail so that it becomes a part of students’ vocabulary.

“Word of the Day” is sent either in English or Punjabi language by the state headquarters. The word is discussed during the morning assembly where the entire school is present.

Punjabi words are explained giving examples and their usage in literature. A few lines related to words are discussed from any poem or story.

English words are discussed a bit differently. First pronunciation of the word is discussed with phonetic symbols. It is followed by word’s pronunciation in British and American English. The history of the word is discussed, including its meaning and grammatical usage. Synonyms of the word are also discussed with students in the end.

In Punjabi, words like ‘Ukaab’, a kind of bird and ‘Unaab’, a variety of Indian jujube, ‘Ukhil’, were discussed during the last week. In English, words discussed were personality, peer, awesome, sumptuous and furlough.

“Discussing a new word in the morning assembly helps a lot. When a certain word is discussed with students in a particular manner and in detail it remains in their memory. It helps students remember the word and make it a part of their daily life,” said Neeru Kaura, principal, BCM School, Focal Point.
