The approval for transfer granted by Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, to Savita Uppal to be appointed principal of Arya College, Ludhiana, from Swami Ganga Giri Girls Janta College, Raikot, was withdrawn during the meeting of the Panjab Syndicate held in July, yet she continues to hold the office to date.

Savita Uppal was earlier serving as the principal of Swami Ganga Giri Girls Janta College and was later got herself transferred to Arya College by showing that both the colleges were being run by the same parent body, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Punjab, under the grant-in-aid scheme of Punjab government. Uppal got herself transferred in 2017, after which many objections were raised in this regard and the matter was sent to Panjab University and Punjab government.

“The decision of transfer Savita Uppal was reviewed by Panjab University during the Syndicate meeting held on July 30, during which the approval granted for her transfer as principal of Arya College, Ludhiana, from Swami Ganga Giri Girls Janta College, Raikot, was withdrawn,” said Naresh Gaur, Syndicate member from Ludhiana.

“The approval of the principal’s transfer has been withdrawn by the university but her holding the position will prove fatal for the students studying in the college. Once the approval is withdrawn, the university will not recognise her and her signatures will not be accepted by the university. Signatures on any forms sent from the college will not be accepted by the university. In other words, the principal will become a ‘non state actor’”, said Prof Arvind Malhotra, secretary, Faculty of Business Management and Commerce, Panjab University.

Savita Uppal, principal of Arya College, when contacted in this regard, said: “The Syndicate had already given permission for my transfer but now they have withdrawn it due to reasons best known to them. The matter will be further discussed in the Panjab University Senate and the decision taken there will be final. I’m now waiting for the Senate meeting to take up the matter.”
