Bariatric surgery safe for severely obese people, say experts

Despite growing awareness about obesity, the disease is spreading like an epidemic in developed and developing countries including India. Bariatric (weight loss) surgery is considered as a safe and effective treatment option for those affected by severe obesity. This observation was made in two-day “International Bariatric Surgery Conference-cum-Live Operative Workshop” at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) recently.
The organising secretary, Dr Ashish Ahuja, said series of live operative workshops, which proved beneficial for budding bariatric (weight loss) surgeons, were held on Day 1 of the conference.
“Obesity Run” from Sutlej Club to DMCH campus, with participants covering a distance of 2 km was organised on Saturday, the second and concluding day of the conference.
Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana, Pradeep Aggrawal along with the chief cardiologist, Dr G S Wander, and medical superintendent, Dr Ashwani Kumar Chaudhary, flagged off the marathon.
The city Mayor, Balkar Singh Sandhu, received all participants at the DMCH campus. Medals were given to all participants.
Dr Sumeet Shah from Max Smart, New Delhi, delivered lecture on “Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomty” during scientific sessions. Dr Sandeep Aggarwal from AIIMS, New Delhi, spoke on “The future of roux-en-Y gastric bypass in India”. It was followed by lectures on “Robotic bariatric surgery”, “Bile gastritis”, ‘Endoscopic bariatric procedures” and other interesting topics by guest speakers from various parts of the country and abroad.
The organising chairman, Dr PS Nain, proposed a vote of thanks to all participating delegates and guest speakers. He also acknowledged their active participation in the two-day conference.
