Bollywood fashion designer speaks on ‘no stitch designs’
Ludhiana, November 7
Kanwaljit Singh, fashion designer from the Indian film industry, conducted a two-day workshop for INIFD students.
Kanwaljit has designed for three generations of Kapoors, Khans, Khannas and Kumars. The veteran designer was in the city for a two-day workshop ‘Outfits without a stitch and drapes’ at INIFD.
“I wanted to give an absolutely tangential approach to designing for young minds, so that they do not always follow conventional design approach of illustrating, having mood boards, theme boards, design, research fabric and eventually start drafting and pattern making. In the film industry, sometimes we receive an order for a shoot at night and the production expects us to have the garment delivered by morning. No excuses and reasons are accepted if we have to survive in the trade. Understand the scene, source fabric, drape it immediately and then come out with sketches based on the final look of the garment. That is where the importance of understanding draping with minimum stitching comes into play. One scene and a drape, if done correctly, is enough. And that is what my endeavor is to teach the students,” said Kanwaljit.
“The two-day workshop has endorsed my belief that my home Punjab state is full of talent and beauty. I did not have to hunt for models for the outfits. I believe no one can carry garments as beautifully as they as designers themselves can,” he said. —TNS
