Resident of the industrial city wake to a foggy morning today. Contrary to last year, winter this year has had an early start.

According to the Meteorological Department of Punjab Agricultural University, the minimum temperature recorded today was 10 degrees Celsius and the maximum 16.6 degree Celsius. The relative morning humidity was recorded at 97 per cent and the evening humidity 75 per cent.

According to the department, the weather is expected to remain cloudy with possibility of fog during mornings and evenings.

While residents are getting the feel of real winter, it has brought smiles to the faces of hosiery traders. The sale of thermal inner wear and caps and mufflers has seen an increase. “As the mercury has dipped, the sale of woollens has increased, specially the stuff of kids. People are buying woollen caps, mufflers and socks to protect their kids from the chill,” said Harminder Singh, a retailer from Model Town.

Gagan Khanna, another shopkeeper, said the demand for hot bottles had gone up. “After the recent rain, the demand for hot bottles has picked up. I bought a new lot of hot bottles today,” he said.

While a few city residents are enjoying the chill, those who live below the poverty line are getting worried about the days to come.
