Additional Municipal Commissioner Rishipal Singh, along with other officials of the civic body, today visited Jawahar Nagar Camp from where they have been getting complaints of contaminated water for a long time. Rishipal claimed to have detected the problem. He said a solution would be provided within two or three days.

Talking to The Tribune, Rishipal said the MC staff had detected the problem and the solution would be provided soon. “We met the residents and looked into the problem. We are hopeful that they will get relief soon,” he added.

Meanwhile, the area councillor, Kapil Sonu, looked dissatisfied over the way things were moving. He said the MC had a shortage of staff because of which the real problem was not being solved. He said the real problem had still not been detected. “They have asked sewer men to clean choked sewers first. Once these are cleaned, source of contamination will be detected. The MC has a shortage of sewer men and fitters. They will not be able to attend to a large number of complaints. We hope we get relief soon because conditions are too bad to live here,” he said.

The residents said they have been forced to drink contaminated water for the past five months. They had held dharnas and protests to bring the problem to the notice of the MC. “There is no value for human life here. Had this happened in developed countries, the officials would have been punished. But here people are suffering from water-borne diseases while the authorities are still trying to find the cause of the problem,” said Santosh Kumari, a resident of Jawahar Nagar Camp.

The authorities have asked the Health Department and the MC to distribute chlorine tablets in the area. Meanwhile, on the issue of contaminated water being supplied to the Jawaddi area, Rishipal said it was more of an “artificially created” problem. There is no problem of contaminated water in the area, he claimed.
