Clean hands to keep disease at bay: Experts

The Lions Club, Ludhiana, celebrated “Global Handwashing Day” at Government High School, Phullanwal. Varun Chandok, club president, and Dr Rajesh Thapar, senior vice president, shared the importance of clean hands with students.
Dr Thapar said, “Over 200 million people in 100 countries are taking part to mark ‘Global Handwashing Day’. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs. A number of infectious diseases such as gastrointestinal infections and respiratory infections, such as influenza can spread from one person to another by contaminated hands. We should wash our hands properly with soap or hand wash for 20 seconds.”
He said, “One should not forget to wash the backs of hands, wrists, between fingers and under fingernails. Wash the hands with running and clean tap water.”
Chandok said, “We should wash our hands after using toilet or changing nappies, before and after preparing food, between handling raw and cooked or ready-to-eat food, before eating, before and after attending sick children or other family members, after smoking, after handling litter, working in the garden etc.” The club donated 500 hand wash packs at the school.
Meanwhile, the Rotary Club organised workshops at various educational institutes and slums at Mandi Ahmedgarh on Monday.
Acting president SP Sofat lemphasised on the significance of washing hands. Highlighting various aspects of personal hygiene, he said washing hands is vital for healthy life.
Students of Paragon International Schoool, Dehlon, Victoria College for Women, Dehliz Road, Ahmedgarh, MGMN Senior Secondary School, Ahmedgarh, and Government High School, Jandali, were also informed about hand washing techniques.
