The trial for bio-CNG filling at the High-Power Methane Plant I, Haibowal Dairy Complex, has started here, under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Aggarwal.

The project comes under the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA). Aggarwal said, “This is the first biogas plant in country where biogas will be divided into two parts for the generation of methane and carbon dioxide gases, which will be used as domestic gas cylinders or for commercial use and it will be available in market also.”

Users will be given an option to use this gas as it will be relatively cheaper from other gases. The trial will continue for next 15 days, after which it will be sold to public. According to PEDA officials, the gas will be available in 10-kg cylinder and 40 cylinders will be filled at a time. At present, the plant has the capacity to generate 4,000 kg of gas, which can be filled in 400 cylinders.

They said the plant required 235-tonne cow dung to prepare the gas and carbon dioxide generated through cow dung could be used for making cold drinks (in their agencies). Aggarwal said this was the new technique introduced in the region to produce gas.

Anupam Nanda, district manager of the PEDA, said the plant was complete to start with the trails. He said gas would be available at the plant for Rs 45 per kg and 10-kg cylinder would cost Rs 450 to a consumer. The cost of the bio-CNG plant is Rs 7 crore.
