Colleges to offer degree in vocational courses

Right after Class XII, students can now also apply for vocational courses for a smooth planning of their future. These courses will help students in filing the gap between the industry and the skilled employees.
Many colleges in the city are now providing Bachelor of Vocational Courses (BVoc). Under these, students will gain practical knowledge, along with theoretical knowledge, which will further help them in easy placements in various industries.
The degree in Bachelor of Vocational Courses is sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC). After doing courses, which range from one to three years, students can get either a diploma or a degree. Further, one can pursue a masters degree as well after the completion of any vocational course.
“More stress is laid on practical knowledge in these courses. The curriculum is 60 per cent practical and 40 per cent theory. Students also get the opportunity to apply for internships in the related industry,” a teacher at a city college said.
The minimum qualification required to apply for these courses is Class XII certificate with atleast 45 per cent marks. One-year course is a diploma course, two-year is an advance diploma while the three-year is a degree course.
Some of the courses offered at city colleges include retail management, food processing and quality, banking and insurance, web technology and multimedia, e-commerce and digital marketing, beauty aesthetics and wellness, fashion designing, hospital administration and management, medical lab technology.
Kavita, who is pursuing a degree course in web technology and multimedia, said: “Today’s time is the time of technology. Web technology and designing are here to stay. Be it be any company or establishment, they want web space for further development. I am still to complete my degree and I have already started web designing on a small basis. Once the course is complete, I plan to join a good company.”
