Ludhiana, May 19

After a clash between the supporter of Lok Insaf Party (LIP), Raju Kwatra, his kin while demanding arrest of the Congress councillor, Manpreet Grewal, and his supporters, laid a siege to the Shivpuri chowk in the late evening on Sunday. Kwatra is father of social worker Anmol Kwatra.

Dharna lasted for over one-and-a-half hours and the traffic literally came to a standstill. Protesters lifted dharna only when police officials assured them that action would be taken against the Congress councillor and workers.

Anmol also appealed to residents through the Facebook to join his protest against the Congress councillor and others. Several political leaders, including Gurdeep Singh Gosha from Shiromani Akali Dal and Tejpal Singh, candidate of Lok Sabha elections from Ludhiana, have come out in support of Anmol.

Anmol alleged that his father was today attacked in Shivpuri by Congress councillor Manpreet, his aide Mohit Rampal, and others allegedly due to political enmity.

On the other side, Congress councillor Manpreet said he had defeated Raju Kwatra, who had fought on the LIP ticket, in the last MC elections due to which he was not in good terms with him. Kwatra was levelling baseless allegations against him, he added.

“Today, at around 5.45 pm when voting was about to end, I called my supporter Mohit Rampal to cast his vote where Raju Kwatra entered into arguments with him and also hurled abusive remarks following which a scuffle ensued. When the incident happened, I was at some other polling booth and immediately rushed to the spot where Anmol along with his supporters also arrived and challenged after which both the parties entered into a brawl,” the councillor told Ludhiana Tribune.

“Our worker also suffered injuries,” he added.

The police said two persons were arrested in the case and further probe was on.
