A deadly spell of bowling by Balwinder Singh (six for 28 runs) steered Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNE), Ludhiana, scripted an easy victory by 51 runs against Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Tangori (Mohali district), and emerge champions in the Inder Kumar Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) Inter-College Cricket Tournament that concluded at the ground of the DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology, Jalandhar, today.
Teams from 44 colleges affiliated to the Punjab Technical University (PTU) battled it out during the last 20 days in the tournament during which matches were played at the GNE, Ludhiana; DAVIET, Jalandhar, IET, Bhaddal and SUSCET, Tangori (Mohali).
In the final, batting first, GNE College scored 182 runs in 38.5 overs. Their innings revolved around Rahul and Pavit, who contributed 38 off 52 balls and 33 runs in 62 deliveries, respectively. Japjot chipped in with 21 runs that came off 35 balls.
Chasing the target, Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and Technology could manage 131 runs in 32 overs. For the winners, Balwinder Singh got rid of six batsmen after conceding 28 runs while Avinash captured two wickets for 26 runs in the eight overs to fashion victory for their side.
Dr Sehajpal Singh, Principal, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, appreciated students on their achievement. He also congratulated the team coach, Varinder Kumar, and director, physical education, Harjinder Singh, for guiding boys to achieve the desired goal in the cricket tournament.
