Ludhiana, August 6
Harbhajan Singh Dang (65), senior Akali leader-cum-councillor from ward no. 46, has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition of the Municipal Corporation (MC) House. District president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Ranjit Singh Dhillon said this on Monday.
Councillor of ward no. 30 Jaspal Singh Giaspura had been appointed as the group leader of Akali councillors in the MC House, Dhillon added.
Akali leaders, including Ranjit Singh Dhillon, Harbhajan Singh Dang and party councillors met Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu on Monday. Akali councillors raised the issues of their respective wards, seeking early redressal of public grievances.
“We asked the Mayor to carry out development works in the city. We raised the issue of choked sewers, contaminated water supply, stray cattle and various others. My brother received multiple injuries when he met with a mishap as a stray bull came in front of his vehicle. Despite charging cow cess, the MC failed to ensure shifting of stray cattle to the shelters,” said Dang.
SAD Ludhiana chief Ranjit Singh Dhillon said, “There is no development in the city. Public grievances are not being addressed. Around 40 per cent street lights are lying non-functional in the city. The civic body should ensure redressal of problems being faced by the public.”
Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu said, “Once the funds are arranged, the development works will be carried out. Their issues will be resolved. The fogging has been resumed in the city.”
“We can consider bringing a resolution in the MC house to offer an office for the Leader of Opposition. Only if MC House approves the resolution, an office can be offered to the Leader of Opposition”, he said.
