The district administration celebrated the International Day for Older Persons at Guru Nanak Bhawan to honour the elderly on Monday. Shena Aggarwal, ADC, Development, said senior citizens had immensely contributed in the growth and progress of our society. It was because of their efforts and blessings that the youth could achieve greater heights in life. The elderly should be respected and love by all. She cautioned if the elderly were not taken care of in the family, it should be brought to the notice of the authorities concerned and legal action should be taken. Social Security Officer Harmesh Singh said the senior citizens could not be deprived of their rights.

Medical camp at Khanna Civil Hospital

A medical camp was organised by Civil Hospital, Khanna, at Vridh Ashram by the team comprising Dr Prabhjot, Medical Specialist; Dr Harbinder Singh, Pathologist; Baljinder Singh, Pharmacist; Gagan Kaur, ANM; Rajwinder Kaur, ANM and Harjit Singh, laboratory technician.

Dr Rajinder Gulati, Senior Medical Officer, said old age did not diminish a person’s inherent dignity and fundamental rights.

The elderly population will increase rapidly as Asia has the largest number of senior citizens, followed by Africa. Keeping this in mind, attention needs to be paid to the needs and challenges faced by the elderly.

Dr Gulati said every one demanded equal respect and acknowledgement for their services to the society.

Celebrations in Doraha

Dream and Beauty Charitable Trust celebrated Senior Citizens Day as well as the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Vibrations Auditorium, Heavenly Palace, Doraha. The function began with the singing of the National Anthem. Chairman Anil K Monga welcomed the chief guest, Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu. This was followed by the lamp lighting ceremony. A programme was presented to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi by the children of Heavenly Angels, a home for orphans. Residents of Heavenly Palace sang songs, presented dance performances and staged skits. A bhangra was also performed. Advisor Dr Sardara Singh Johl gave the vote of thanks.
