Father rapes stepdaughter

Ludhiana: The Division No. 7 police booked two Jalandhar-based men for raping a woman. One of the accused is a step father of the victim. The first accused was identified as Balbir Singh. He is owner of Jaggi Mechanical Works, Rajinder Nagar. The second accused was identified as Bunny. Investigating officer (IO) Sukhwiner Singh said the main accused, Balbir, a middle-aged man, had an affair with the rape victim’s mother, a resident of Ludhiana. They were in a live in relationship and were residing in Jalandhar. After the victim’s mother died, the accused started molesting his step daughter. The victim alleged that she was served some liquid laced with sedatives recently after which the accused, Balbir, and his aide Bunny, raped her repeatedly. The accused also forcibly usurped property of the victim worth lakhs and some gold ornaments, said the IO. Raids were being conducted to nab the accused, he added.

Synchronise traffic lights: DCP

DCP Dhruman Nimbale held a meeting today with officials of companies managing traffic lights in the city. He asked them to synchronise traffic lights else face legal action. Meeting was attended by representatives of DIMTS, Sainico and RR. The DCP told officials that due to incorrect timing of lights, there were frequent traffic jams. Some lights were not functioning, he added. The DCP asked officials to install sensors on those traffic lights where congestion of vehicles was more.

15-year-old girl sodomised

The Sadar police booked a man on the charge of sodomising a 15-year-old girl. The accused was identified as Johny, alias John, a resident of Manakwal village. The complainant stated to the police that she went to her sister-in-law’s house on July 27. She was stunned to see that her sister-in-law’s daughter (15) was lying naked in the bed. The victim told the complainant that the accused had indulged in unnatural sexual intercourse with her. TNS

Man held for trafficking turtles

Ludhiana: Officials of the Forest Department have nabbed a man for trafficking turtles.  The accused used to bring turtles from UP and sell these to aquarium owners in the city. Turtle is protected under Schedule 1 of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and its confinement in any form is a non-bailable offence. Munish Kumar of Haibowal used to illegally get turtles from Uttar Pradesh and then supply these to traders here with the help of his accomplices Khushkaran Singh of Rishi Nagar and Jaspreet Singh of BRS Nagar. Division Forest Officer (Wildlife), Phillaur, Khushwinder Singh said they got a tip-off on Thursday and laid a trap at night.  However, they could not succeed. But they succeeded on Friday when Khushkaran came to supply turtles near the railway station. The accused have been booked under Section 9, 49 and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act. TNS

Woman gets life for murder 

Ludhiana: Additional Sessions Judge Jasvir Singh Kang has convicted Reena (32) of Nakodar, Jalandhar district, on charges of killing her stepdaughter, Reva (7), and father-in-law Narinder Kumar (61) of Punjab Mata Nagar here. She was ordered to undergo rigorous life imprisonment. A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on the accused. According to the prosecution, strained relations with her stepdaughter and lust for property led to the double murder. Reena had cooked up the story of an attack by unknown persons, which she told her husband on the phone. Her husband, Hitesh Anand, lodged a complaint with the police in July 17, 2012. Later, the police arrested Reena and recovered the hammer used by her to kill her stepdaughter and father-in-law. OC   

Man alleges cop fired on his SUV

Ludhiana: A car-borne man alleged that a policeman fired on his vehicle mistaking him a criminal in the Jamalpur area on Friday. However, the police said no firing took place. The incident reportedly occurred in the evening when Karamjit of Sahbana village, who was driving an SUV, hit a cyclist and tried to sped off.  A policeman, who witnessed the incident, started chasing the SUV. Karamjit said the policeman opened fire and one of the tyres of his SUV burst. Karamjit, along with his two friends, abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot. Jamalpur SHO Avtar Singh said after ramming his vehicle into a cyclist, Karamjit sped off. He was neither chased by the police nor fired on. TNS

Cinemas asked to install CCTVs

Ludhiana: Cinemas and multiplexes have been told to install CCTV cameras and adhere to the fire safety norms. A meeting of police officials and managers of the respective establishments was held. Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhruman Nimbale chaired the meeting. “All cinema houses and multiplexes should have proper fire safety arrangements, so preventive action could be taken in case of urgency. Even the inspection of the safety measures should be done regularly by the department concerned,” the DCP said at the meeting. He also asked the managers to screen videos pertaining to the road safety, so movie watchers could also learn about road safety. The managers also agreed that before the start of films and during intermission, they will screen video clips on road safety. TNS
