Ludhiana, October 8
The Municipal Corporation has issued work orders for the dismantling of a dilapidated overhead water tank near Cheema Chowk. The contractor has been asked to start dismantling work within seven days.
The MC gave this information through a letter written to the registrar of Punjab State Human Rights Commission. In the letter, the MC has admitted that the condition of the water tank is poor.
Earlier, a city resident had complained to the commission against the civic body for not taking steps to dismantle the “unsafe” overhead water tank.
Superintending Engineer of MC Rajinder Singh said tenders were floated earlier also for the dismantling of the tank but no bids were placed then. Tenders were floated again in September and the work orders issued on October 4, he said.
Meanwhile, the complainant, Arvind Sharma, said the civic body had been delaying the dismantling of overhead water tank. He requested the authorities concerned to ensure early demolition of the tank to prevent a tragedy. “Parts of this dilapidated reservoir have been falling apart for a long time but the civic body woke up only after I filed a complaint to the Punjab State Human Rights Commission,” he added.
