Ludhiana, December 31

The Central Jail staff recovered five mobile phones from inmates during a surprise check yesterday. The accused from whom the mobile phones were recovered have been identified as Anvinder Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Sanjay Kumar, Sahildeep Singh and Harminder Singh.

The police have registered a case against them under Section 52-A of the Prison Act at the Division Number 7 police station. The police have not ruled out involvement of the jail staff in sneaking the mobiles into the jail.

“During a surprise check in the jail, we recovered five mobile phones. A case has been registered against the inmates from whom the mobiles were recovered. We are trying to know how these mobile phones reached the inmates,” said Sukhjinder Singh, Assistant Superintendent of Central Jail, Ludhiana.

After being informed by the jail authorities, a police team from the Division Number 7 station reached the jail and launched investigation into the matter. Constable Premjit Singh said a case had been registered against five inmates on a statement of the Assistant Jail Superintendent. “We are investigating the matter. If any member of the jail staff is found involved in helping inmates in getting mobile phones, action will be taken against him too,” he added.

This is not for the first time that mobile phones have been recovered from the jail inmates.
