The department of animal nutrition, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), organised a three-day training on “buffalo farming for milk and meat production”. The training was held under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna-11 (Special Component) for the SC/ST farmers of Punjab. Twenty dairy farmers from across Punjab participated in this training.
S Rampal, director of students welfare, said buffalo farming was the need of the hour and there was a huge potential ahead for rearing buffaloes for meat production, in addition to milk. He added that the feed accounts for 70 per cent of total cost of dairy farming and by using nutritional technologies farmers can economise feeding of their animals to make it a profitable venture, which not only provided the needed employment to the unemployed youth but also lead to diversification in agriculture.
Experts from the department of animal nutrition delivered lectures on various aspects of buffalo farming along with practical demonstrations. The objective of the training was to ensure a balanced feeding of various categories of buffaloes around the year using locally available feed ingredients.
Manju Wadhwa, head of the department, said the department had various technologies to provide balanced and quality nutritional supplements to animals. Different types of mineral mixtures were available for various species of animals; even area specific mineral mixture was also developed by the department according to area requirements of Punjab region, she added.
