The city might have attained the tag of ‘Smart City’ but when it comes to cleanliness; it seems the work has not even begun.

Be it the posh localities or the old city areas; the story is the same. Garbage is scattered up to the roads and roads are not able to take minimum rainfall and get filled with water in no time. All these insanitary conditions are leading to vector borne diseases.

Whenever any disease spreads, the Health Department and Municipal Corporation keeps passing the buck to each other.

On the one hand, the Health Department claims that it keeps disseminating information regarding the spread of diseases and the precautions that need to be taken, and on the other, the Municipal Corporation claims that the fogging is done on time and it is the Health Department which has to keep a check on the spread of diseases.

Garbage can be seen openly littered in the areas such as Sarabha Nagar, BRS Nagar, SBS Nagar. “Every morning when I go to drop my kid at school I see the huge piles of garbage on the roads. It becomes difficult even to pass from the stretch during the rainy season. If this is the condition of the one of the posh localities, which is also being developed as model ward, then I wonder what will be the condition of the localities in the old city area. Summers are here and so are diseases spread by mosquitoes. The authorities concerned should pay attention towards this and lift the garbage regularly so that it does not lead to diseases,” said Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of Green Park.

Meanwhile, Ram Parkash Sharma, a resident of Jail Road said, “The garbage lifting truck comes but it is once a week. Whole week foul smell keep emanating from this place which leads to diseases. Garbage littered on the roads and vacant plots become haven for flies and mosquitoes which spread diseases,” said he.

Dr Ramesh Bhagat, District Epidemologist, when contacted in this regard said, the Health Department is doing its duty regularly. “We are disseminating information regarding the diseases and the steps that need to be taken to curb them. Written material is also being distributed to people in this regard. The duty of fogging lies with the MC and fogging is effective only when then mosquitoe gets adult,” he said.

On the other hand, newly-elected Municipal Corporation Mayor, Balkar Singh, when contacted in this regard said, after assuming the charge on the first day he asked for the co-operation of the public. “The MC will take every measure in taking care of the problem of garbage, be it be the appointed of more sweepers or anything that is needed. We also want co-operation from the public. The way they keep their house clean should also owe the responsibility of keeping the city clean,” the Mayor said
