GST council extends date for filing returns

The 35th meeting of the GST Council was held recently in which key decisions were taken on GST. The last date for filing of annual GST return has been extended from June 30 to August 31. Besides, the last date for filing of GST ITC-04 (return for material sent on job work) has also been extended from June 30 to August 31.

Mantosh Gupta, a tax professional, said even tax professionals were not aware of change in dates. “The date for filing of several forms has been extended recently,” the tax professional said.

“The electronic invoicing system in a phase-wise manner for B2B transactions is introduced by the council. It will also help tax authorities in combating the menace of tax evasion. The Phase -I is proposed to be voluntary and shall be rolled out from January 2020. There will be blocking of e-way bills on non-filing of returns for two consecutive tax periods, to be brought into effect from August 21, instead of June 21,” he said.

Besides, he said the GST council took decision to introduce new return system in a phased manner.

The tax professional saidsaid the GST Council in its recent meeting had provided much needed relief to the tax payers and tax professionals.
