Harjinder Singh, who performs kirtan at the historical Gurdwara Reru Sahib here, is much more than a ragi. He has been inviting children of every age group to the gurdwara and giving them lessons in life, of his own free will and most selflessly. Resultantly, young children, who had gone astray, have now had a befitting homecoming.
Harjinder Singh's family, whose has settled abroad, wants him to stay with them permanently, but the ragi seems to be entirely devoted to the cause of serving humanity. He wishes to serve the "sangat" and dedicate his entire life for the noble cause of serving his fellow beings. He wishes o spread the word of God in all hearts, here and abroad, and assist people to rise above the brutal acts and rude words which have resulted in mistrust and hatred.
There have been a number of instances where the aggressive youth were pacified by Harjinder Singh and brought back to the mainstream. Most of the adolescents, who had begun doing drugs, were advised by Harjinder Singh to the extent that they not only shunned drugs but also understood the concept of dignity of labour in its true sense.
A graduate from Khalsa College, Amritsar, and a diploma holder in electronics, Harjinder Singh was thoroughly religious minded from adolescence. His love for "kirtan" came to the fore when he was into his business after completing his studies.
His passion for offering selfless services to the Almighty, made him leave business and join National Andh Vidyalaya. After three long years, he came out polished and refined to serve in various gurdwaras, and spread the name of God in the rotted minds to end hatred and selfishness forever. Four of his cassettes have been released and "sangat" looks forward to hearing the melodious voice of this ragi everyday at the gurdwara.
He has been to almost every region of Punjab for performing kirtan. But his endeavour to spread love makes him special and adorable. He has been to Kenya, Tanzania and Muscat where he trained children in the art of living.
"I keep on visiting foreign countries just to spread the word of God and meet children who may be educated as far as their right behaviour, true approach and complete dedication towards their parents and elders is concerned," he said.
President of Gurdwara Reru Sahib Baljit Singh said Harjinder Singh had simply no craving for money or any other material possession. "He is entirely devoted to his task of performing kirtan or educating children morally," he added.
