The efforts of various non-governmental organisations for getting the garbage dump near ancient Bhadarkali Mandir of Jagraon shifted yielded fruit when the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Jagraon Municipal Council to shift it to some other place as soon as possible.

Following the directions from the High Court, the authorities of the Jagraon Municipal Council have started the process to get the garbage dump shifted.

Local residents had been struggling for a long time to get it done. Residents, led by the office-bearers of Bhadarkali Mandir Management Trust and social activist Jahnvi Bahal, had staged many protests against the Municipal Council in this regard.

They said the people visiting the temple had to face a lot of problems due to the foul smell emanating from the dump.

When the Municipal Council did not initiate any process, Jahnvi Bahal had filed a public interest litigation in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Local Bodies Department of the Punjab Government has submitted an affidavit in the High Court.

In the affidavit, Joint Director of the department, Rakesh Kumar, told the court that the garbage dump would be shifted soon.

According to MC authorities, the process to shift the dump has already been started and the civic body has been searching for some new place for dumping the garbage. Jagraon MC Executive Officer Amrinder Singh said the civic body would soon shift the garbage dump and clean the place.
