Sahnewal, March 5

Despite repeated reminders and media attracting the attention of the authorities towards the perennial problem of traffic congestion in Sahnewal, the latter remain unfazed. The traffic congestion in Sahnewal is assuming dangerous proportions day in and day out. The traffic police have done little to regulate the rush in the town and ease the problems being faced by residents, passers-by and commuters as a matter of routine.

The biggest problem being faced by the people of the town, at present is the entry of heavy vehicles in the town from Dehlon road, despite the fact that it had been banned long time back and they have been provided an alternative route in order to ease the traffic blues of the residents. “The written instructions, due to the absence of any serious check, are generally ignored to the extent that the truck drivers simply lift the warning board aside and make as easy a passage into the town as any cycle or scooter,” expressed Harbans Singh Sains, a resident of Sahnewal.

“The repercussion of the same has to be borne by other vehicles as the entire traffic comes to a stands still. To make matters worse, the truck drivers and tempos not only enter the town at their own will but seldom bother to reduce their speed in the busy areas of the town. As a result a number of fatal accidents have taken place till date,” expressed Rajiv Kapila, a shopkeeper of the town.

“As there is a single market road in Sahnewal where all types of vehicles such as cycle, rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, trucks and buses converge, the situation goes entirely haywire. The vehicles remain stranded for long hours and each day the abuses are hurled at each other by the commuters are simply unbearable,” rued Jeevan Kapila, a resident of the town.

SP Traffic Tarun Rattan when contacted said there was a solution to every problem. “Though there are cops available to check the entry of heavy vehicles, but we can always find a permanent way out which may not require even the presence of a policeman every time and traffic too shall be regulated on its own. I have thought of fixing permanent roads from which the entry of heavy vehicles would be rendered impossible and the traffic problem shall be automatically resolved.”
