LUDHIANA: The 31st Jarkhar Sports Festival, popularly known as the Mini Modern Rural Olympics, got off to a colourful start on Sunday. The Mata Sahib Kaur Stadium of Jarkhar village situated about 15 km away from here on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road, was decorated and the participants were encouraged with the thunderous applause by the spectators, present there.  Kuldeep Singh Vaid, MLA, Gill constituency, declared the festival open by releasing coloured balloons. He appreciated the organisers of this festival for holding the event for the over three decades. He also assured them all sorts of assistance in running the festival without any hindrance in future. oc

‘Act against pvt transport mafia’

The Punjab Pensioners' Union held a meeting at Issru Bhawan on Saturday. They demanded action against the growing menace of private transport mafia, which they said was eating into the state government's treasury and emptying its coffers in the absence of adequate government bus service. They said the mafia of private transporters had become even bigger and the government was not taking any action against them. They said they would participate in the strike to be observed by the Transport Department on February 21.

Dr Harinder Singh gets fellowship

Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Chairman Cardiac Sciences at Ludhiana, Mediways Hospital, was conferred Honorary Fellowship of the Punjab Academy of Sciences (PAS) at the 21stPunjab Science Congress held at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, on February 7.  The executive committee of the academy conferred this fellowship on Dr Bedi for his contribution in the field of cardio- vascular. Dr Ramesh Chand, Member NITI Aayog, Government of India, was the chief guest on this occasion and  Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon; Vice-Chancellor, PAU, presided over the Punjab Science Congress.  The theme of the Congress this year is 'Scientific Advances for Inclusive Development and Environmental Protection.'

BKU criticises Central Govt 

Bharti Kisan Union Punjab (Lakhowal) lambasted the Central Government for the 'anti' farmers policies. The union said such policies are forcing the farmers to intensify their agitation.  Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, president of the state unit of the union, said, the Central Government led by Nardendra Modi has been failed to fulfill its promises due to which the farmers were still suffering.  He said the farmers across the country would gather at Delhi on March 13 against 'anti' farmers' policies. The farmers will demand from government to fulfill the promises made with them.  He further said a large number of farmers from various districts in Punjab would participate in the agitation.

Antim ardas today

The antim ardas of former Additional Director, Information and Public Relations Department, Gulzar Singh Sodhi, who passed away on February 8, would be held on February 11 at Gurdwara Guru Singh Sabha, Model Town Extension, from 1 pm to 2 pm. He has left behind three sons. The Punjab Public Relations Officers’ Association and senior officials of the Information and Public Relations Department mourned the demise. tns

Royal King Club win kabaddi cup

Samrala: The USA-based kabaddi team, Royal King Club, beat Baba Sukhchain Dass Kabaddi Club, Shahkot, by 41-35 in the final to win the first place in the academies matches at Malwa College Bondli Samrala organised by Malwa Sports and Welfare Club at Samrala. A total of eight kabaddi teams of North India Federation Academies participated in this tournament. OC

2 held with 17 mobile phones

LUDHIANA: The police have arrested two snatchers and recovered 17 mobile phones from them. ACP Central Mandeep Singh along with inspector Police Division No. 3 Harjinder Singh conducted a press conference on Saturday. The accused have been identified as Sagar Verma and Rohit Verma. Inspector Harjinder said the accused snatched the mobile phone from one Vinod Gupta of Ravidaspura on February 7. When the police started probe into the matter, the snatchers were traced by the police, he said. He said the accused have committed over a dozen mobile snatchings in the past few months and now, would seek their remand, adding that more recovery of looted mobile phones could be made in further probe. The police said after snatching mobile phones, the accused used to sell these to a shopkeeper Shanky Chabra, a resident of Saroop Nagar, Salem Tabri. Shanky further sold these to some shopkeepers in Gurh Mandi. “We are conducting raids to trace Shanky and his arrest could lead to some more recoveries of looted mobile phones,” he said. tns

Gang of robbers busted; 3 arrested

Ludhiana: The city police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers and arrested three of its members. The police have also recovered a motorcycle, 20 mobile phones and some weapons from them. The accused have been identified as Bikramjit Singh of Model Town, Shivam of Abdulpur Basti and Mandeep Singh of Kartar Nagar. ADCP Gurpreet Kaur Purewal said: “A tip-off was received that a gang of robbers, wanted in several robbery cases, were roaming in the area. Accordingly, a naka was laid near Phullanwal Chowk on Pakhowal Road and after intercepting a bike, three robbers were arrested.” The ADCP said the accused were also using a fake number plate on their bike. During preliminary questioning, it came to fore that the accused had been facing snatching and robbery cases against them at various police stations. The gang committed 23 loots in the city in the past one year, the ADCP said. tns

Electronics showroom burgled

Ludhiana: An electronics showroom was targeted by thieves near Suffia Chowk last night. Electronic goods worth several lakhs were stolen by the thieves. Four thieves were captured in the CCTV cameras. Ashok Malhotra, owner of the Advance Electronics and RK Sons, said he closed the showroom around 8.30 pm last night. “Today when I came to open the showroom at 7.30 am, I was shocked to see the uprooted shutter. Thieves ransacked the entire showroom and decamped with four LEDs, 15 mobile phones, mobile phone accessories and computer accessories. The loss could be around Rs 3 lakh,” he said. As per the CCTV footage, four miscreants were seen uprooting the shutter. They entered the showroom at 1.40 am and left with goods at 2.30 am, the showroom owner said, adding that the faces of three thieves were covered, while that of the one who entered the showroom was not. He said the police were informed about the matter and CCTV footage was also handed over to them. TNS

Farmers told to avail subsidy on equipment before Feb 28

Ludhiana: The Chief Agriculture Officer (CAO), Baldev Singh, said, “The Punjab Government has been providing several types of agriculture equipment on subsidy under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) to farmers in the district.”  Divulging details, the CAO said the government was giving subsidy of Rs 2 lakh on three self- propelled-six row transplanters, Rs 75,000 on one walk behind machine, Rs 12,800 to Rs 21,600 on seven potatoes planters and Rs 22,000 subsidy on seven potatoes diggers. “Similarly, subsidy of Rs 10,800 to Rs 29,000 on five cotton seed drills/multi-crop planters is being given to the farmers,” he added. “Subsidy of one lakh is also being offered on three self-propelled reaper binders. The subsidy is being given on many other machines,” he said. “Farmers can submit their application in the office of Block Agriculture Officer or District Agriculture Office till February 28 for availing subsidy on these machines,” he added.
