Lakshay wins 2 titles in badminton meet

Continuing with his consistent performance, local badminton prodigy Lakshay Sharma added another feather to his cap as he scored a brace, by clinching two titles in the Under-15 category in the Sub-Junior Open Punjab State Badminton Championship held in Jalandhar from September 26 to 30.

Lakshay (13), a student of Class VIII at Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, stamped his superiority by wrapping up the titles in the singles and doubles categories.

In the singles’ final, Lakshay scored an emphatic victory over his city mate Arnam Jain (14), a student of Class IX at Sat Paul Mittal School, whom he outperformed in straight sets 21-14, 21-10 to stitch up the title.

Lakshay then partnered with Arnam Jain to quell a strong challenge from Gurdaspur duo of Akarshit Sharma and Svanik Attri before coming out triumphant 21-18, 21-19 to secure the title in the doubles group.

This was the third consecutive title victory for Lakshay in the state tournaments. Earlier, he won titles in the Punjab Ranking Badminton Tournaments for two years in a row.

Lakshay has already established himself in the state as well as national arena by winning titles in various national-ranking tournaments, for which he was invited by the Badminton Association of India to attend the summer coaching camp, which provided an ideal platform to further improve his skills, as he played against the best talented players during the course of this camp.

Mohinder Singh Grewal and Anupam Kumaria, president and general secretary, respectively, of the District Badminton Association, Ludhiana, lauded the achievements of Lakshay and Arnam and wished the duo more success in future tournaments.

  • Lakshay Sharma and Arnam Jain — both trainees of an NIS qualified badminton coach Mangat Rai Sharma have also finished among position holders in a couple of international-level tournaments namely International Youth Badminton Championship-2017 at Glasgow in Scotland, Swiss Youth Open Championship and Oliver Junior Badminton Cup held in Hamburg (Germany).
